They Only Have Us
Nearly 17,000 youth in Illinois who have suffered trauma and neglect are cared for by the Department of Children and Family Services – which means Illinois is their parent.
Over 85% of these vulnerable youth are supported by private child welfare agencies like UCAN that are the sole providers of the supportive care they need and deserve. These vulnerable youth who have already suffered from abuse and neglect need Illinois – their parent – to deliver the resources for the vital care they need for a brighter future.
However, Illinois has failed to meet its moral and financial responsibility as a parent.
What can you do? Help us stand up for our youth who only have us.
The Illinois Senate recently passed Senate Bill 2547, which proposes an increased reimbursement rate to private child welfare agencies. The bill also establishes a sustainable methodology for reasonable yearly increases that account for rising costs incurred by private child welfare agencies to care for our youth.
We applaud this strong statement of support from the Senate. But it is only a step in the process. Youth in care in Illinois now need you to demand that the Illinois House of Representatives also pass the bill. Show your support for Illinois becoming a better parent by increasing reimbursement rates.
Sign this online petition today and you will receive a communication to forward to your friends and others. The petition will be delivered to Springfield by UCAN youth advocates, and presented to legislators in the Illinois House. Demand that Illinois become a better parent by passing legislation to raise reimbursement rates to improve support of youth in care.
Thank you on behalf of the youth of Illinois.
