Educating Children & Families


Uhlich Academy and High School is an innovative 1st- 12th grade therapeutic day school, uses special education curriculum and experienced staff to help students who have experienced difficulties in previous school settings and who benefit from a smaller, more individualized classroom setting. 

Career Services  is UCAN's Alumni Services/Career Development Program (ASP), serving young adults who are leaving or have left the child welfare system, or who have participated in other UCAN services.  ASP provides these young adults with life skills training, work readiness, employment placement, and supportive services, so that they are better prepared to contribute to society as workers and productive citizens.

FamilyWorks is an on-site case management program to assess, support and transition families to self-sufficiency with a strong emphasis on workforce development, involvement in communities, and overall family stability in selected Chicago housing projects.

Foster Grandparents is a program for eligible seniors who volunteer up to twenty hours per week in a variety of elementary schools across South Suburban Cook County. The seniors work in designated classrooms to tutor and help young students develop social skills.

Family Habilitative Services is a program where trained homemakers provide weekly in-home support and assistance for families experiencing a range of circumstances that threaten the family's ability to meet or protect the needs of its members. Assistance may include improving household management skills; temporary respite care while the family caregiver is temporarily disabled or unavailable; and relief for families caring for a member with serious, on-going physical or mental health needs.

High School to College (H2C) assists youth in the foster care system to identify and reach their goal of enrolling in and attending either high school or post-secondary education. H2C helps improve participants' academic and professional skills.

High-Risk Infant Program supports families expecting or experiencing multiple or high-risk births. The program offers transportation for parents to and from the hospital to visit their infant; a liaison with hospital staff; home-based support; and follow up for up to three years after the births.

HomeWorks provides a continuum of services to help stabilize families and decrease student truancy, dropout, and expulsion rates. HomeWorks engages students through academic assistance, clinical interventions, and leadership skills training, and offers community referrals for longer-term connection to resources.

Parenting and Family Education Classes and Seminars help families develop the skills they need to create a nurturing home. These education programs have been court approved. In addition to the group classes, parents are offered supplementary assistance during weekly home visits. This education series is also available to corporations, schools, houses of worship, and organizations where parents/ families meet.

Parents Anonymous®promotes mutual support and parent leadership to build and support strong, safe families. Parent-led support groups using Parents Anonymous'® Shared Leadership model allow parents to meet weekly and exchange support, insight, and resources that help them be the best parents they can be.

TransParenting (for Families in Divorce) teaches a four-hour interactive seminar to help divorcing parents maintain effective parenting and lessen the negative effects of divorce on their children. Parents receive a handbook of tools and resources for continued assistance after they complete their program.
