Help for CPS Kids' Trauma

The "I know why kids are killing. They're hurting" editorial (Sept. 4) identifies a critical need in the Chicago Public Schools' curriculum. Fortunately for the students and teachers, there are readily available programs with proven success. Since 2005, UCAN and other community partners have been poised to work with CPS in these areas.

The full effects of trauma on youth, whether they are directly or indirectly involved, are still being understood. Working with traumatized youth and families has taught us that there is no single approach to helping someone heal. It has also taught us that young people experience trauma completely: They become unengaged in class; they become short-tempered or tearful with seemingly little provocation, and they become distant from even their closest friends. We stand behind a multifaceted approach to addressing violence among our youth and empowering our youth to lead.

We would encourage the Chicago Public Schools to reach out to their community partners who have proven success with these services for youth, and let the healing begin.
