Teen Gun Survey

UCAN's Teen Gun Survey is an annual survey of teens nationwide.  Teens discuss their exposure to gun violence and their attitude toward current prevention efforts.  Select participants then join prominent legislators in presenting the results of the Teen Gun Survey and in offering concrete suggestions on how to improve gun violence prevention efforts.

"As a teen in Chicago Public Schools, it is unacceptable for us to be in fear of gun violence every day."  - Ashley, Hyde Park Academy

Each year, the Teen Gun Survey gives youth an outlet to express their opinions and to reflect upon how violence affects their peers nationwide.  In 2007, 62% of females believed that violence in movies, video games and TV leads to gun violence (42% of males agreed).  66% of teens said that, "there should be a ban on assault weapons for anyone who is not a military or law enforcement officer."

Mayor Richard M. Daley said, "I think the results of the survey put the issue of teen violence in clear focus and that every person in Chicago should find them disturbing.  This should be a wake up call for all of us."
