June 28, 2010: UCAN honors future leaders at Youth Advocacy Awards.
Held on June 9th at the Four Seasons Hotel Chicago, UCAN's 11th Annual Youth Advocacy Awards dinner recognized six outstanding Chicagoland youth with scholarships for higher education. UCAN also presented the 2010 Corporate Honoree award to philanthropist Richard Driehaus of Driehaus Capital Management, and the dinner raised more than $700,000 in support of UCAN's programming. June 2, 2010: University of Chicago School of Social Services Administration Distinctive Innovation in Social Services Awards
The School of Social Services Administration Alumni Association has chosen the 2010 Distinctive Innovation in Social Services Award recipients: UCAN, for its organization-wide diversity and inclusion strategy, and Casa Central, for its La Posada Interim Housing Program for Homeless Families. March 25, 2010: UCAN To Present Annual Youth Advocacy Awards
UCAN hosts an evening to honor our future leaders - youth who have overcome obstacles of abuse or neglect by turning their trauma into triumph and hope - with the 11th Annual Youth Advocacy Awards ceremony. Their inspirational stories of resilience and strength will be celebrated with the presentation of the four 2010 Youth Scholarship Awards and the John E. Rooney Dynamic Scholar Award. March 1, 2010: UCAN releases the results of the annual Teen Gun Survey
Alarmed by increasing gun violence in their neighborhoods and schools, Chicago teens are asking local, state and national policymakers to help keep them safe. UCAN representatives, joined by U.S. Congressman Michael Quigley (IL-5) and Illinois State Senator Donne Trotter (17th District), were on hand as teens reported the findings of UCAN's Teen Gun Survey, generously funded by the Joyce Foundation. February 25, 2010: UCAN trains youth to determine non-violent solutions for minor criminal offenses
The Altgeld Riverdale Community Partnership is the proud recipient of $252,000 from the Edward R. Byrne Fund of the Recovery Act, with funding to be spent over two years to create local youth courts. UCAN will lead the program, working in partnership with the Foundation for Family Empowerment, Inc. The project also has the support of the Chicago Housing Authority. February 11, 2010: UCAN earns first statewide contract with Teen Parenting Service Network (TPSN)
Teen parents face a tough road, but now young, struggling parents throughout Illinois will have access to a unique program designed to prepare them for success. Teen Parenting Service Network (TPSN) has expanded to assist teen parents in the entire state of Illinois. February 10, 2010: UCAN receives a $5,000 grant during National Mentoring Month from Lawyers Lend-A-Hand to Youth
Lawyers Lend-A-Hand to Youth, a Chicago area program that works to promote one-on-one mentoring relationships between disadvantaged youth and members of the legal community, provided UCAN with a $5,000 grant in January, which was National Mentoring Month. December 3, 2009: Chicago Youth Call for End to Gun Violence
Second Annual Urban/Suburban Youth Summit on Gun Violence aims to inspire solutions and change. The Summit will be held at George Westinghouse College Prep High School, 3223 W. September 18, 2009: Come join UCAN at the 2009 Charity Classic on October 1st.
This fabulous event takes place at the Willis Tower from 5-9pm on the 66th and 67th floors. Food, drink, live bands, silent and live auctions, all with a "Sweet Home Chicago" theme. UCAN will receive 1/3 of the net profits. To read the press release, click here.
September 14, 2009: UCAN launches LGBTQ Host Home Program.
The LGBTQ Host Home Program partners LGBTQ homeless youth with caring adults who willingly open their homes to provide shelter and stability for youth ages 17 - 21. The goal of these intentional placements is to support youth in a "permanent" transition from homelessness to independence by creating a safe, affirming housing option where they can pursue their educational and career goals for up to two years.
